I am the proud owner of a curvaceous body. I love my curves, truly. But most trends aren’t made for the curvy figure. The menswear trend for fall is one of the more challenging because it’s based on the straight lines of the male figure. So how does a woman like myself wear the trend?
The best approach is to choose one aspect of menswear to play up – either the cut or the fabric. Since the cut can be a problem, a curvy woman’s best bet is to wear female silhouettes in menswear fabrics.
The skirt I’m wearing in the above photo is made of a tweed fabric I found at DeCarlos Bespoke in Jersey City. The fabric is the kind of thing you would typically find in a newsboy cap, but it becomes a siren call when cut into a high-waisted pencil skirt. We added a front pocket for distinct detail.
Choosing a menswear pattern or fabric pays homage to the current fashion trend without making you look like a fashion victim. Other great options are plaid, herringbone and pinstripe. If you’re not sure about what you like, stop in a men’s store for pattern inspiration. Then check your favorite stores for high-waist pants or skirts in those patterns.
The reason I harp on the high waist is because it’s a solid way to accentuate your curves while lengthening your body. The contrast between that ultra feminine silhouette in a strong male pattern makes an impressive statement, whether you’re in the office or out and about. How are you wearing the menswear trend this season?
