Most women find fashion intimidating. It certainly can be. Magazines make you think that you have to look a certain way in order to participate in popular culture. TV shows about fashion make regular women feel like they need a black card to even think about calling themselves fashionable. And websites make us think we’ve committed a felony if we walk out the door with the wrong outfit. What is a woman to do? Why even deal with fashion if it’s just going to make us feel like the odd kid out?
Because fashion is, and always will be, a personal statement. It says something about you, and more importantly it helps you communicate with the world around you. This is where my blog comes in. I’m here to talk about how to make fashion your friend and not your enemy. Fashion is a major form of expression, and no one should feel like they have to cut themselves off from it.
I have been a curvy black woman all of my life (except for those three months in ‘09 when I miraculously got into a size 6). I am a size 10 at the moment, though I have been anywhere from a 6 to a 14 over the years. Through all of those sizes, I was proud of my body because I learned how to dress for my shape – not my size.
Fashion is about body. It’s about shaping and creating a silhouette through choices of fabric and fitting. What’s magical about fashion is that you can create just about any image you want – simply by choosing a shape and dressing for it. If I am curvy, and I want the boyfriend jean look I’ll have to balance out my hips by wearing a blousy top. The fullness from the top creates a sexy boy shape without making me look I’m the dreaded f-word.
So ladies, prepare for some inspiration from yours truly. I will talk about how to wear trends, how to wear accessories and how to dress for your body shape. We are going on this fashion journey together, and we’re going to look amazing doing it!
